In the last 6 months I have been working with Propellerheads Reason 6 full version on both Mac and WinPC (previously with Reason 5 and Record 1.5). I made the move for several reasons. I wanted a machine I didn’t have to change operational settings as I moved from the music creation environment to business application environment that is necessitated in a Windows based system. I needed the platform to be mobile (I use a MacBook Pro), and I needed the ability to bridge any works in progress to my main DAW system which is Sonar.
I have Reaper but it does not have a workflow that suits me. I am sure it works for others, but it does not work for me. Logic Pro is a Mac only based system . That leaves me with little selection for a DAW that will run on both platforms (such as Nuendo or Cubase which I deffinately don’t like the workflow of). While Propellerheads Reason 6 is a great and stable program the inability to utilize external instruments like Superior Drummer 2 leaves me having to mary the drum tracks in only after I Rewire Reason into Sonar. Or I have to use Reaper as a surrogate till I marry the drum tracks together in Sonar X1c.
In my opinion I find the workflow in both Sonar and Reason to be far more intuitive. The need for having manufacturer specific hardware is mitigated. And finally it is a workable solution when working in a mobile setting. For the time being.
I would like to see Cakewalk’s Sonar X1 enabled for Mac with a key system similar to Propellerheads Reason 6. Then I can move from PC to Mac based platform without having to rely on a PC for final mixdown. Actually, I think I’d rather hvae an all Mac system with a Mac Pro for the studio and my MacBook Pro for mobile usage. But more on that later…..
